First look at OSX Yosemite

Today I had pleasure to install new beta of the OSX Yosemite OS. After signing in to beta program I’ve downloaded and installed the new version of this OS. It looks different from previous version but in my opinion it looks better. Trust me, dark mode really do the job :) Below are some screenshots of my desktop. There is no dock. I’m prepering some more when I’ll be ready to do some review. One day is not enough to judge.

My first Mac

Few months ago I bought my first mac. This is a MacBook Pro 15” with 512GB of HDD and 16GB of memory. Processor is Intel 2.3GHz. I choose this hardware because of my work. Mainly I’m a web developer which has to deal with strong usage of several hardware consuming services. Before this computer I had Samsumg laptop with similar configuration and that was ok for me. So i thought that this device will meet my needs.

After using it for couple of months now I can say that this is the best computer I’ve ever had. Not only because of the hardware but software too. I’m talking about OSX mainly. The system itself is very user friendly. Small things make this OS great, like notifications, touchpad gestures and so on. Some of the third party applications that are prepered for this OS are not only beutiful but usefull too. For the first time managing passwords with 1password was a pleasure for me. I’m using Evernote for a long time now and for the first time it looks good. I can go through all of my applications that I’m using but this is not the case. Before I choose an application I’m trying serveral of them in that specyfic area. This is my way of selecting solutions for my daily work. So every application on my computer i selected with patients. And on Mac I’m always getting proper app, which looks just beautiful.

Before OSX I’ve been using Debian with Xmodan as Window Manager. This was a great experience, mainly because of stability. I’m not done with that configuration – I have Debian or Ubuntu on my test and production servers. I’ve needed solution for my work station. It’s nice to launch applications with keybord and to have this open source environment, but after some time I’ve decided to move to more useful platform, where I can have tools ready to speed up my work out-of-the box. In Mac with OSX I have that.

Installation of gem RMagick in Debian GNU/Linux

When installing RMagick gem you could step into some troubles with building this gem. Probably you are missing some development packages. In my case this was imagemagick itself plus some development headers:

Can't install RMagick 2.13.1. Can't find MagickWand.h.

apt-file search MagickWand.h showed that package libmagickwand-dev includes this file. So quick

apt-get install imagemagick libmagickwand-dev

solve this problem. After that gem install rmagick -v ‘2.13.1’  finished with success.

Email’s sending using sendmail is slow – log says unable to qualify my own domain name

If you’re using sendmail to send emails and response from server is very long and your mail.log or mail.info says something like this:

Jan 10 11:13:27 HOST sendmail[24278]: unable to qualify my own domain name (HOST) -- using short name

thats the result of setting wrong hostname. Try to set FQDN from root to correct value:

hostname mydevsrv.domain.com

After that sendmail should gain some speed.

Vampire stars

The universe is a diverse place, and many stars are quite unlike the Sun. An international team has used the VLT to study what are known as O-type stars, which have very high temperature, mass, and brightness. These stars have short and violent lives and play a key role in the evolution of galaxies. They are also linked to extreme phenomena such as gamma-ray bursts and “vampire stars,” where a smaller companion star sucks matter off the surface of its larger neighbor.

Waving solar seaweed + PIC

One of the many mysteries about our Sun is how its outer atmosphere (corona) gets heated to more than 20 times its surface temperature. Well, it looks like new observations of waving solar seaweed by the sensitive Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) might hold the answer.

Firefox 5

Grooveshark podkusił mnie dzisiaj do ściągnięcia nowego Firefoxa.
